Different Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Whenever laser eye surgery is mentioned, most people immediately think of LASIK. While this is correct, it’s not the only type of laser eye surgery around. There are actually several types of this procedure, all of which differ based on the needs of your eye condition.

Here are some of the methods that could be given to you by your eye surgeon in the event that you do qualify for it. It will be in your best interest to talk to them more about it so that you can know exactly what to expect for the procedure.

LASIK (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis)

This is the most popular among all laser eye surgery types. What makes this rather common is the fact that it can deal with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. As these conditions are also highly common, it only follows that the treatment for it is also as popular.

LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis)

Not to be confused with LASIK, LASEK is a laser eye procedure that keeps the cornea’s surface layer as a flap. Having this intact supposedly helps facilitate faster healing, as well as offers added protection against complications and infections.

PRK (Photorefractive Kertectomy)

In this procedure, a laser reshapes the cornea, but does not require the protective flap to be cut. This is best suited for those with lower prescriptions.

Wavefront-Guided LASIK

This is a custom version of the more common LASIK surgery. It is largely considered to be the most advanced laser technology there is in today’s market. Using wavefront technology, the laser creates a 3D image of the eye allowing for a more custom approach for your eye procedure.

To determine which kind of laser eye procedure suits your condition best, consult with your eye doctor first.
